This test assists doctors in assessing the condition of the heart muscle tissue, detecting scar tissue, and determining whether the heart muscle can be preserved through specific therapies.

What Is Cardiac MRI (CMR)?

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR), or cardiac MRI, is an imaging test that utilizes magnetic fields and radio waves to produce high-resolution images of the heart. Unlike echocardiography, which is excellent for assessing real-time cardiac motion, cardiac MRI offers the advantage of evaluating the condition of the heart muscle tissue in greater detail.

This examination can help doctors:

  • Detecting scar tissue (fibrosis).
  • Assessing heart muscle viability—determining whether the muscle tissue is still alive and has the potential to recover.

Claustrophobia
Some patients feel uncomfortable inside the enclosed MRI space. In certain cases, doctors may consider a specialized approach to ensure the examination can still be performed safely.

What Is the Cardiac MRI Process Like?

Cardiac MRI is a non-surgical, painless procedure.

During the examination:

  • The patient lies on the examination table.
  • The examination takes approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on requirements.
  • The patient is asked to remain still and occasionally hold their breath for a few seconds.
  • For some examinations, a contrast agent is administered via an IV line.
  • Due to the use of a magnetic field, the patient will hear the rather loud noise of the MRI machine; therefore, earplugs or headphones are usually provided during the examination.

How Do Doctors Interpret Cardiac MRI Results?

After the examination is complete, the doctor will evaluate various aspects, including:

  • Heart pumping function (Ejection Fraction).
  • Extent of scar tissue.
  • Evidence of a past heart attack.
  • Signs of myocarditis.
  • Type of cardiomyopathy.
  • Heart muscle viability.

These results are then combined with other examinations—such as ECG, echocardiography, or coronary angiography—to determine the most appropriate treatment.

  • Suspected cardiomyopathy.
  • Suspected myocarditis.
