What is MICS and CABG? Find Out the Difference Here!

13 December 2024

Every year, sufferers of heart disease continue to increase. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, 17.9 million deaths were recorded due to heart disease. This figure is expected to increase to 24.2 million in 2030.

Therefore, to reduce the death rate, surgery is carried out with the aim of correcting problems that may occur in the heart organ. This surgical procedure consists of several types, such as MICS and CABG. Come on, find out about the differences between the two in this article!

MICS

Getting to Know MICS

MICS (Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery) or minimally invasive heart surgery is a surgical procedure performed by making a small incision in the chest—both the left chest and the right chest—using a tool laparoscopy (thoracoscope) to reach the heart.

The aim of the surgery is to help treat various heart conditions. Not only that, surgery can also reduce pain and speed up the recovery process. Several procedures that are often performed through MICS surgery include:

  • Replacement or repair of the mitral valve (one of the four valves that function to close and open).
  • Closing patent foramen ovale (a hole in the heart that does not close after birth) and atrial septal defect (a heart disorder characterized by a hole in the second chamber of the heart.
  • Replacement and repair of the tricuspid valve (a valve in the heart that is useful for ensuring blood flows throughout the body.
  • Taking the saphenous vein (blood vessels in the legs that can help drain blood from the soles of the feet and legs to the heart) for coronary artery bypass surgery.

MICS Procedure

This minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) procedure usually uses a method of thoracoscopy. Where, the procedure is carried out in this way direct vision through a small incision in the chest.

When an action is taken, thoracoscope will be inserted into the body through an incision to see the condition of the heart.

CABG

Get to Know CABG

CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) or known as heart bypass surgery is a surgical procedure performed on patients who experience narrowing and blockage of blood vessels in the arteries. The surgery is done by making a new line in the blocked blood vessel.

The goal is to help prevent coronary heart disease and improve blood circulation throughout the body so that the heart muscle can continue to receive nutrition and a good supply of oxygen. Sufferers who are recommended to carry out the CABG procedure are as follows:

  • The arteries responsible for supplying blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked.
  • Reduced blood flow to the heart causes severe chest pain even if you only do light activity or even rest.
  • Blocked heart arteries, but cannot be treated with the Coronary Angioplasty procedure.
  • The left ventricle (lower left heart chamber) is not functioning and the blood vessels in the arteries are disrupted.
  • After carrying out an angioplasty procedure and it was not successful, it caused the blood vessels to become blocked again.

CABG Procedure

The CABG procedure is carried out by taking blood vessels from the patient's legs or hands and then grafting them into the coronary arteries. The CABG procedure generally uses two methods, namely without a machine or using a heart-lung machine.

For those who do not use a machine, the heart is usually allowed to continue beating during surgery. After successful installation of the artery graft, the doctor will immediately close the breastbone that was previously cut and sew it up.

Meanwhile, if you use a heart lung machine, the heart will stop beating temporarily. Then, the doctor immediately places the graft into the artery and after the graft is successful, the doctor will immediately sew up the incision made.

Difference MICS and CABG

Even though they both prevent heart disease, MICS and CABG have several differences, including:

  • In MICS, the surgical procedure only consists of a small incision of around 8 cm on the right and left side of the chest. Meanwhile, in the CABG procedure, the incision is made up to 25 cm and opens the breastbone.
  • CABG usually uses two operating methods, namely using a machine and without a machine. Meanwhile, MICS uses the method thoracoscopy.
  • MICS recovery is generally faster, with minimal pain and scarring. Meanwhile, CABG takes around three to five days.

That's a brief explanation of the differences between MICS and CABG. If you want to consult regarding surgery or heart surgery, you can go to Premier Jatinegara Hospital. Premier Jatinegara heart surgery Jakarta Specialist, provides medical treatment for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery or Coronary Bypass Surgery.

Coronary Bypass Surgery is an operation performed to overtake (bypass) the part of the coronary blood vessels that is blocked due to the buildup of plaque such as fat, cholesterol and cell debris using arteries or veins from the patient's body.

This operation is usually performed using the MICS method (Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery) with an incision of approximately 5 cm and handled by the best heart doctor. The operation is useful for improving the flow of coronary blood vessels so that the supply of oxygen to the heart muscles becomes normal again, thereby eliminating symptoms of chest pain and reducing the risk of death caused by a heart attack.
